I’ve recently written an article in TechCrunch on the much-disputed issue of IoT security. Fact of the matter is IoT truly is a phenomenon that can change our lives – or destroy them. There are many things that are right with IoT but there are also many others that are wrong and need to be fixed.
With many thanks to Art Swift and Larry Loeb for their excellent thoughts on IoT security, following are five areas where IoT security issues need to be tackled.
Freelancing might sound appealing and profitable. Being your own boss, working at your own pace, and not being bound by corporation constraints are all alluring ideas that draw many people into the freelancing business. Add to that the many success stories of lone wolves turned rich overnight by signing up in freelance sites, and you might think you’re headed for a dream come true.
But if not done right, freelancing can be the source of major headaches, as I came to learn to my dismay (that’s a story left for another time). At the center of most of those headaches are customer issues.
Of course it is. With internet and mobile services accounting for a large part of our personal and corporate lives, hackers have a lot of means in their disposition to target us, harm us, steal our information and use it in malicious and evil ways.
Just look at the recent Ashley Madison hack, or the several huge data breaches in healthcare services which have resulted in the theft of personal information belonging to millions of people. If that isn’t enough, you can take a look at the OPM hack, in which Beijing-backed hackers took off with information belonging to more than 20 million U.S. federal employees, including fingerprint data for more than 5.6 million people.
Chinese President Xi Jinping will be visiting Washington this week and meet with his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama. Against the backdrop, the two countries are busy fighting each other on the cyber front. Last year has seen a spike in Beijing-backed cyber attacks against U.S. targets.
In retaliation, the U.S. has charged Chinese officials for being involved in cyber-crimes against U.S. businesses and federal institutions, and Obama is weighing the option of slapping new sanctions against Chinese authorities.
MI5 chief Andrew Parker has called for greater power in monitoring online communications, arguing that the terrorist threat to the U.K. is at its peak in the three five decades and social media networks need to share user information with governments and law enforcement agencies in order to help track and arrest persons endangering the country’s national security.
The motion set by Parker could lead to the possible banning of highly encrypted communications, which could render messaging apps such as the Facebook-owned WhatsApp and Apple-made iMessage illegal.
Ever since the advent of computers, humans have been searching for ways to create software that better address their daily needs. Today, desktop, web, and mobile applications have grown in complexity and size to the extent that there isn’t a shred of our lives that isn’t dependent in one way or another to some sort of application.
Complex software need better programmers. Specifically, complex software need better teams of programmers. The era of single-person programming is long gone, and unless you’re planning to do programming as a hobby, you’re going to need to learn teamwork if you want to embark on a successful programming journey.
