Tribit Stormbox Flow: A powerful and durable speaker with great battery life

Tribit Stormbox Flow

The Tribit Stormbox Flow is a portable Bluetooth speaker designed for users who prioritize durability and battery life. It offers a powerful bass response and a fully waterproof build for a reasonable price of around $79.99. It has decent sound and a basic app for customization and can serve as a dependable option for outdoor use or for anyone needing a speaker that can last for days on a single charge.

Design

The Stormbox Flow has a functional and robust build. It measures 3.5 by 7.9 by 2.1 inches and weighs 1.5 pounds (660g). Available in a matte gray finish, the speaker features a perforated grille on the front and a second grille on the back that protects a passive radiator. Rubber feet on the bottom and back allow it to be positioned either firing forward or upward.

A control panel on top includes tactile, raised buttons for power, Bluetooth, volume, EQ, and TWS pairing. A central multifunction button handles playback and calls. The speaker’s USB-C charging port is not covered by a flap, and a removable lanyard is included for portability. While the design is durable, its aesthetic is simple and might be dull compared to competitors (I personally prefer basic designs).

Features

The Stormbox Flow is equipped for outdoor conditions with an IP67 rating, which certifies it as fully dustproof and waterproof. It can be submerged in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes without damage. It connects via Bluetooth 5.3 and supports the SBC and AAC codecs.

The speaker can be paired with a second Stormbox Flow for true wireless stereo (TWS) sound. It also functions as a power bank, allowing you to charge devices like a phone through its USB-C port. A built-in microphone enables speakerphone calls.

The companion Tribit app for Android and iOS allows for some customization. It displays battery life and provides access to EQ presets and a nine-band custom equalizer. However, the app experience might be rudimentary for power users who want super-detailed controls.

Sound quality

The Stormbox Flow is powered by a 25W driver that produces a bass-forward sound. At moderate volumes, it delivers a strong low-frequency response, particularly with the “XBass” mode activated. The sound can get quite loud, but as the volume increases, digital signal processing (DSP) audibly reduces the bass to prevent distortion. This can make the audio sound muddy and less clear at higher levels.

The default sound signature emphasizes bass at the expense of higher frequencies, which can lack presence and detail. The sound profile also changes based on the speaker’s orientation; placing it flat can add some brightness from surface reflections. While the default sound may not suit all listeners, the in-app EQ is effective for boosting the highs. The speakerphone microphone is functional for calls.

Battery life and pricing

One of the Stormbox Flow’s strongest features is its battery life. It can last up to 30 hours on a single charge, or approximately 24 hours with the XBass mode enabled. This is roughly double the battery life of some key competitors in its class. A full charge from empty takes about four hours.Priced at $79.99, the speaker is an affordable option in the portable market. For users who need a speaker to endure long outdoor trips or extended use away from a power source, the Stormbox Flow provides excellent value. Its combination of a rugged build, powerful volume, and exceptional battery makes it a practical choice, despite its unrefined app and bass-heavy default sound.
